PLTKIN COUNTY AIRPORT EXTERIOR SIGNS
The airport represents a use which is exempted from the existing
(:ounty sign codes. Currently, approval of the airport signs are
the responsibility of the airport manager. Based on existing
County sign codes, directional signs cannot exceed .75 sq. ft.
The proposed airport signs should be considered directional
signs. This has dictated that the airport develop an approach to
signage which is appropriate in scale and design to their needs.
DESIGN, GRAPHICS & SCALE
The primary concern was to develop signs which were both legible
and readable. Appropriate scale and readibilty was determined In
the field by testing letter heights. Standard airport terms
dictated the message lengths. The sign panel sizes were then
determined by the length of the message and the letter heights.
The importance of the information and the location of the sign
were primary considerations in determining the actual letter
heights that were recommended. The signs were then categorized
into types based on the importance of the information. Another
concern in the development of the airport signage was to develop
a system which could serve the existing needs of the airport as
well as the future needs of the proposed airport. The system,
including the use of international symbols where appropriate, is
a clean, straightforward approa~h to airport signage. The A & B
signs are designed to accommodate internal lighting at a future
date with minor adaptations to the proposed signs. Lettering and
"ymbols would be reflective die cut vinyl or paint. A summary of
the sign types is outlined below.
SlGN TYPE A - MAJOR DIRECTIONAL
'l'hese are provided at crucial decision points for t];e driver.
Letter heights are 7" to 8" for caps (3-3/8" lower case).
Secondary information on the A signs has 5" cap height. Signs
are dark charcoal gray with white letters. Symbols are red and
light gray or whit~. Sign panels for the A signs are 6"-3" long
and vary from 2'-6" wide to 4--0" wide. Square footage for the
smallest A sign: 15.32' Total A signs: 2
C:~:':10
.
.
SIGN TYPE B - SECONDARY DIRECTIONAL
These occur at decision points which contain less importan~
information. The driver in most cases will either be stopped or
will be driving at a slower speed. Letter heights are 4" for
caps 12-1/4" lower case). Colors are the same as the A signs.
Sign panels for the B signs are 1"-9" by 5'-4". Total square
footage: 9.33". Total B signs: 8
SIGN TYPE C - REGULATORY
These are primarily regulatory and restrictive signs which are easily
moved, making them adaptable to changes in the airport design.
They are disks, 18" in diameter, mounted on posts with weighted
bases. Colors used are dark charcoal gray, light gray, white and
red. Letter heights vary based on the message, however, the C
signs are more graphic in appearance and rely on the use of
international symbols for clarity. Total C signs: 65
