R Subsurface conditions encountered in the exploratory pits excavated in the proposed building azea consist of silty sand and gravel with some cobbles and boulders. Groundwater was not encountered in the pits at the time of excavation. The proposed residence can be founded on spread footings placed on the natural subsofls and designed for an allowable bearing pressure of 1,200 psf. The report which follows describes our investigation, summazizes our findings, and presents our recommendations. It is important that we provide consultation during design, and field services during construction to review and monitor the implementation of the geotechnical recommendations. ' PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF STUDY °~ Tliis report presents the results of a subsoil study for a'proposed single-faintly residence to be located on Lots 1 and2, Elk Mountain Subdivision, Pitkin County, Colorado. The`project site is"shown on lig. 1. The purpose of the study was to develop recommendations for the foundation design: The study was conducted according to our October. 4, 1994'Professionai Services Agreement with rake and Sharon Maness.: Afield exploration program consisting of two exploratory pits was conducted to ........... obtaisinformaton on subsurface conditions. Samples obtained during the field . exploration were tested in the laboratory to determue.engineering characteristics of the on-site soils: The results of khe field exploration andillaliora`torytesfing~were analyzed `~ ` ` ~ ~ .. to develop recommendations for foundation types, depths and allowable pressures for ~ the proposed building foundation. Rock outcrops are not present on the property, but prominent sandstone ciffs are present to the west. FIELD EXPLORATION The field exploration fox the projecf was conducted on October 5, 1994. Two exploratory pits were excavated at the locations shown on Fig. 1 to evaluate the subsurface conditions. The pits were dug with arubber-tired backhoe. The pits were logged by a representative of Hepwozth-Pawlak Geotechnical Tnc. Samples`of the subsoils were taken with disturbed sampling methods. Depths at ,, . ... ; which the samples were taken aze shown on the Logs of Exploratory Pits, Fig. 2. The samples were returned to our laboratory for review by the project engineer and testing. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS Graphiti logs of the subsurface conditions encountered at the site are shown on ~.Y Fig. 2. The soil profiles in the tvvo exploratory pits consisted of one foot of topsoil underlain by a medium dense, silty sand and gravel with some cobbles and boulders. The silty sand and gravel extended to the full depth explofed of 9 feet. Free water was not encountered in the pits at the time of excavation in early October,'1994. Laboratory testing performed on samples obtained from the pits included natural moisture content and gradation analyses. Results of gradation analyses performed on the less than 5-inch fraction of`the natural silty sand and gravel are shown on Fig. 4. The laboratory testing is'summazized in Table L .~3;,. , ~* ~; 3 DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS ~ FOUNDATIONS _ Considering the subsoil conditions encountered in the'exploratory pits and the nature of the proposed construction, we recommend the building to founded with spread footings beating on the natural silty sand and gravel: The design and construction criteria presented below should be observed fora spread footing foundation system. 1) Footings placed on the undistorted natural silty sand and gravel should be designed for an allowable soil bearing pressure of 1,200 psf. Based on experience, we expect settlement of footings designed and constructed as discussed in this section will be about 1 inch or less. There could be some t additional post construction movement if the'§ilty sand and gravel were fo be 'wetted. 2) The footings should have a minimum width of 16 inches for continuous walls and 2 feet for isolated pads. 3) Exterior footings and footings beneath unheated areas should be provided with __.. 4 of foundationsc at least 42 in he sbel~ elevation for frost protection: 'Placement ~ ow exterior grae~e is typically use3~inthis ~ b area. 4) Continuous foundation a%a1ls~should be reinforced top and Tiotfom to~span local ~ ~~ ~ ~~ anomalies such as by assuming an unsupported length of at feast 12 feet. To reduce the effects of some differential movement, floor slabs should be' sepazated from all beazing walls and columns with expansion joints which allow unrestrained vertical movement. ;Floor `§lab control joints should be used to reduce damage due to shrinkage cracking. The requirements for joint ' spacing and slab reinforcement should be established by the designer based on experience and the intended slab use. A minimum 4-inch layer of free=draining gravel should be placed beneath basement level slabs to facilitate drainage: This matei•ial~ _ " should consist of minus'2-inch aggregate with of least SO% r'etained on the No. '4 sieve and less than 2 % passing the No. 200 sieve: materials for support of floor slabs shouiitbe"cornpacteciio at least'95%~`~ ~ ~ ' ~~ d of maximum s tandazd Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum. We assume the cut depttis for the basement level will not exceed one Ievel; atiout 8 0 10 feet. Fills should be limited to about 8 to 10 feet deep. Embankm@nt fills should be compacted to at least 95 % of the maximum standazd Proctor density near optunum r moisture content. Prior fo fill placement, the subgrade should be carefully prepared by removing all vegetation and topsoIl and compacting to 95 % standazd Proctor density. The fill should be benched into the portions of the hillside exceeding 20% grade. Permanent unretained cut and fill slopes should be graded at 2 fiorizontal to 1 vertical or flatter and protected against erosion bysrevegetaton or ofIier means. The risk of slope instability ovill be increased ifseepage is encountered in cuts. Cut slopes flatter: than those recommended may be necessary. If seepage is encountered in' permanent cuts, an investigation should be conducted to determine if `the seepage will adversely affect the cut stability.
